 Earl the Turtle

Jim St

The 12 month old postings are starting to vanish from FB, so who knows what we have lost.  Here is one from Nov 1, 2009.

Here is the thread that started this. I copied it from a photo from Christine of a big snapping turtle.

Christine Beals Martin Of course this was at the farm in Missouri. And of course, you know where my boys get the trait that they have to pick up every living wild thing they can catch.....

Linda Stephens Ellenburg WOW did that thing come out of Mc Gee creek?? On the Farm?? No wonder my toes grew together as a kid swimming in the "candy hole". Please tell me it is not soooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!
            July 10 at 6:48pm

Linda Stephens Ellenburg Did the flowers come up this year? Poppies? Peonia's? tigger lillies? Is the "baby breath" bush still down at the log house? It was so pretty, also the Japnesse Quench bush at the newer house. spelling is bad but ya get it right? lol Is the ole Mulberry tree still standing? I have photo's of Grandpa Ed beside it . Many moons agoJuly 10 at 6:51pmJim StI never saw box turtles get that big. I think it may have had something to do with what the Stephens boys liked to do with turtles and .22's, but I never had anything to do with such a thing. I only saw some swimming in the spring branch that were maybe 6" across.Gotta watch one this big, it can take off fingers or parts of arms. when did you see this monster anyway?
            July 11 at 12:20am ·

Christine Beals Martin We found him this spring. He's a snapping turtle, but the creek was still really cold, so he was pretty sluggish, lol...Robbie was paralyzing baby frogs by dropping them in the water, it was so cold, lol.

Linda Stephens Ellenburg If you follow the McGee Creek south, it ends in the Mingo Wildlife area. A lot of large unique animals follow the creek to the farm area. go on line and check out Mingo Wildlife refuge Puxico Mo and you will see all... the changes they have done there. Before moving to the farm age 4-5 I lived on ditch 3 and ditch 7 while dad was in WWII.
            July 11 at 5:51am

Linda Stephens Ellenburg I am so happy you all enjoy the farm. Aunt Zelma or Aunt Velma should be able to give you the details on how it became Stephens Farm When you run the records you will see that Grandpa Eddie traded a horse for the 20 acres's above the Candy Swimming Hole. I am so glad that the farm has stayed in the Stephens blood line. There is so much history on the farm. Has any one told you about the Stave Mill Factory that used to be there S W of the spring? a small village was there. The concrete block is from the stave mill.
            July 11 at 5:55am

Linda Stephens Ellenburg The Van Matre side of family will know more about that history. Grandpa Ed had a small store and post office just SW of the log house. Aunt Velma and Aunt Zelma should remember more about that also Uncle EricGrab this history before it is gone.July 11 at 5:58amDana Barnes CartrightWOW...I did not know there was THAT much history to the farm. Ben always talks about it and he took me there back in 1985.....We have not been back since but talk about how we would love to. Maybe next summer we will just have to go!!
            October 28 at 11:06am

Linda Stephens Ellenburg There is major history from Great Grandpa James and his sons Eddie adn James Most things would only be fun to the family, but still lots of neat things. In the 80's I had a family gathering there. Uncle Troy drove folks to the big rock some of The VanMatre sons were there talking about the Mill Uncle ... Read MoreEic, Aunt Gerry, Cindy, Rick and family I think were there also. I remember the smaller kids playing in the spring branch and one found a small snake now that sure perked up the outting lol
            Thu at 9:32am

Linda Stephens Ellenburg I cannot remember who all came that day but it was pleasant and very informative. Unfortantly I did not have a camera or recorder for the event. Luella, Mom, her brother and sisters helped out a lot. We even had a road made down to the spring which was helpful and parked the cars in the lower spring field
            Thu at 9:34am

Linda Stephens Ellenburg Jim I am trying to figure out how to get to the Mingo Wildlife area things. When dad, Fred, was in WWII Mom and I live on one of the ditches. Back then it was Ditch #'s and not road #'s for the area. We lived on DAn and Rose Conder place it was a lovely house. I also helped dad farm the area and loved to get the John Deere spinning when I thought h
            Thu at 9:36am

Christine Beals Martin Well, there are still Stephens-blood boys swimming in the creek, and playing in the spring, and shooting snakes and turtles. Oh, and for Jim's memories, they are also watering the lawn off the porch, lol. I also planted strawberries down there last spring, if the cows didn't kill them all...Thu at 9:38amLinda Stephens EllenburgThat is the one thing that makes me so happy Jim and I waited a long long time to make sure the farm stayed with Stephens blood line. It was the right time and God will bless your efforts. At least no one steals chickens any more and has a chicken fry at the spring lol I do not know if the ole gas tank Dad... Read More had for farm equipment is still there or not . But he had to put a pad lock on it to keep the teens from stealing gas for their weekend trips. Uncle Eric can tell some good tale's there also ... a few years ago Rick, Uncle Eric son documented a lot of things on film of Aunt Velma and Uncle Eric chatting about their child hood. Ask Rick if he stil has the tapes
            Thu at 11:23am

Jim St linda I'll ask on the mingo swamp group if you have not added it in. I sent you and christine invitations from the group home page via facebook. you might see if you have it under requests somewhere. if not send me a note and I'll send it again. I commented about Uncle Fred having to leave food for the wildlife and someone answered that. Hope they have old timers, and you don't turn out to be the old timer there.

Christine, have you looked at the boarding on the old house recently. I wonder if it is still holding. I had Rick plywood it but it's been several years ago, maybe 5 or more. I'd like to be sure that the main part of the house stays sound, which I think are the oldest parts. Eventually if that house is restored those parts would be maybe 150   years old. The front section has the wood hewn beams throughout, and the next section back was added during my dads lifetime, then another addition in the 50's and then I think uncle fred built the kitchen over what I recall was a porch. I think it was this way when Aunt Luella move up with linda for the most part.
            Fri at 12:06am

Linda Stephens Ellenburg The Living room and big bed room , and Linda's ole room , the kitchen ( Fred and Eddie made it longer when they built a new chimney for cook stove in the 50's). The room where the ref was, was the original back porch, and was enclosed for a room before we moved there from the swamp. ( Mingo) . I was 4-5 at the time. I remember moving in... Read More a team and wagon. The back porch we used has the step down. Mom used to wash my feet there as I enjoyed playing ing chicken poop. I been told. The living room where the double windows are, There was a fire place, only source of heat, until chimney was put in for wood stove. The large flat rock that you step out of back porch onto was a original stone from the fire place. The small chicken house to the E of log house has the incubator that Grandma Ester used to hatch chickens in. That is one of the better antiques on the place. It was run by kerosene . The smoke house NE corner from log house. Should still have the meat box in it that Fred/ Louells used to smoke their pork in after butchering. The ole pear tree NE of kitchen is where Fred/ Eddie used to hang the hogs after killing and slit the throats for blood to drain before they put scalding water on the hog to scrape it ....Fred/ Eddie/ and another neighbor would butcher taking until late night to prepare the fresh meat for the smoke house. Neighbor always got a nice piece for helping. Linda's job was to grind sausage while others did other preping of hog. I can remember I would be so tired from grinding sausage as Louella, mom, would add the spices, she had carefully selected from garden Maybe Aunt Velma, Zelma, or Uncle Eric will comment more on the log house. The log house is the ONLY log house left in Wayne County, I also know that the area around the log house has been " water witched" and there is a good vain about 5 Ft NW of the walnut tree in back yard, for drilling a well. It is 3:30am I am sleepy Good night
            Fri at 2:23am

Christine Beals Martin The old house is still as intact as when Rick boarded it up. Rob and I have been in there, and there is no active leaking or anything. I believe the pear tree Linda referred to is gone, or at least not producing, but the old mulberry tree is still there, and the two outbuildings and contents are still there. I have hauled a lot of jars out of there to can with, and the outbuildings aren't in great repair, so I guess the clock is probably ticking on some of that stuff, plus they have been rummaged through. The remains of bee hives, etc., are still there, though not usable, and trees have grown up through some of the old equipment, tires, etc., left there right west of the old house. Oh, and buzzards like to roost in that building where Fred's blacksmithing stuff was. Mom says nothing looks the same until you get in front of the new house. It doesn't look totally the same b/c the trees are bigger, etc., but she said it looked the same when she got there. The yard south of the log house is where I wouldSee More

Info from the Facebook Group I created will be exportable from this blog.  The postings with info will be posted first, then comment ones, hopefully so it makes sense.

This originally was oriented to the Stephens farm near McGee Missouri, but I'll add more information on all of the family as they come up, and will allow.
